In Spitz an der Donau, the Hinterhaus Castle Ruin, an almost thousand-year-old defensive structure, stands on a rocky ridge.
History+
The first documented mention of Hinterhaus Castle dates back to 1243. Its oldest section, the main castle, already existed in the 12th century. During the 13th and 14th centuries, the complex was under the rule of the Knights of Spitz, who in turn were subordinate to the Kuenringers.

The Hinterhaus Castle Ruin is situated in Spitz an der Donau, in the Krems Land district of Lower Austria, Austria. It lies at an elevation of approximately 277 meters above sea level on an outcrop of the Jauerling mountain.

The complex is divided into three distinct areas: a lower-lying northeastern outer bailey, the main castle which occupies most of the rocky ridge, and a southwestern outer bailey.
