The Höhingen castle ruin in Achkarren was an early medieval hilltop castle that played a strategically important role in the Rhine plain for centuries, particularly due to its proximity to the fortress of Breisach and its position on trade routes.

The first documented mention of Achkarren in 1064 suggests the existence of castle structures, which were expanded multiple times in the following centuries. In 1259, Höhingen Castle was explicitly named. It served the Lords of Üsenberg as a replacement for their destroyed ancestral castle. In 1392, Margrave Hesso of Hachberg acquired shares in the castle, which completely passed to Margrave Bernhard of Baden in 1415. During the Peasants' War in May 1525, the castle was burned down by rebellious peasants, including those from Achkarren.
