Hofen Castle
Hofen Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle above the Neckar at about 240 meters above sea level in the Hofen district in the Mühlhausen borough of the state capital Stuttgart. Access is via Wolfgangstraße behind St. Barbara Church. It is the only ruin in the Stuttgart city area with visible wall remains.
Around 1250, next to the village of Hofen, first mentioned in 1120, the castle was built by the Counts of Württemberg to secure the Neckar crossing (ford) and a trade route. Cuno von Mühlhausen is named as the feudal lord.
After the last of the "von Hofen", Luithart IV., died in 1369, the castle passed into the possession of Count Eberhard II of Württemberg and in 1369 as a fief to the noble squires of Neuhausen. The Barons of Neuhausen remained owners of the castle until 1753. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was burned down. In 1753, Joseph Athanasius Baron von Neuhausen returned the fief to Duke Karl Eugen of Württemberg.
In the 19th century, parts of the castle ruin were demolished, and in 1999 it was bought and renovated by the city of Stuttgart.
Layout+
Of the layout of the small marginal castellan castle, the eight-meter-high and 2.5-meter-thick shield wall with the stump of the tower and other wall remains are preserved on the attack side. The palas was probably located in the southeast corner and a wooden building in the southwest corner.
The curtain wall had a thickness of about two meters. The keep, measuring 6.5 by 6.5 meters, still has a height of 13 meters. The core castle was surrounded by a zwinger and moats. Since 2000, the castle complex has been freely accessible.
