Hohenburg Castle

The origins of Hohenburg date back to the year 1000. It was built by the Margraves of Hohenburg from the Diepoldinger family, who were first mentioned in documents around 1050. Its strategic location served to secure a trade route that ran from the lower Elbe via Forchheim to Regensburg. Through an inheritance agreement, the castle later came into the possession of the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg and was subsequently administered by caretakers. The complex underwent several renovations and extensions, including a palace-like expansion in the 16th century. By the end of the 16th century, the castle fell into disrepair after the caretakers left, and it was finally demolished after 1812.
