Hohendießen Castle

The Hohendießen ruin, also known as Hohendießen Castle, is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 530 m above sea level on a hill northwest of the Dießen district (near Hochbergstrasse) of the city of Horb am Neckar in the Freudenstadt district (Baden-Württemberg).

The castle was first mentioned in the 14th century as a Hohenberg fief of the lower noble family of the Dießers.

In 1334, Ulrich and Wolf der Dießer were named as owners of the castle, whose local noble family was already mentioned in a Rechenbach donation document in 1100 and called themselves "Dießer" at the end of the 13th century. After several changes of ownership, the castle was damaged in the German Peasants' War in 1525 and came into the possession of the Lords of Wernau in 1552, who converted it into a castle between 1557 and 1580. In 1696, the castle came by inheritance to the Schenken von Stauffenberg, who sold the castle and the lordship to the Swiss monastery of Muri in 1798. In 1803, the castle and the town came into the possession of the House of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen as part of the secularization. After the castle was owned by the von Ow-Wachendorf family from 1889, the then municipality of Dießen took over the castle in 1965 and had safety work carried out on the ruin in 1999, which was continued by the city of Horb am Neckar in 1990.
