Hoheneck Castle

The origins of Hoheneck Castle likely date back to around 1200, when it was built by the Margraves of Baden and enfeoffed to the noble family of Hacken. In 1252, a knight Wolfram von Hoheneck is mentioned in documents, followed by the first mention of a settlement near the castle in 1291. Through marriage, Johann von Rechberg temporarily acquired parts of the complex around 1440 and had the settlement fortified with walls and gates. In 1345, the Hacken of Hoheneck elevated the locality to a town with the consent of the Margraves. After the Württembergers had already acquired rights to the castle and town from 1360 onwards, Hoheneck presumably passed entirely into their possession by the end of the 14th century, after which the castle fell into disrepair and was no longer used.
