The castle ruin Hohenfels, also known as Alt-Hohenfels, is above the municipality of Sipplingen in the Bodenseekreis. This hilltop castle was once the seat of the Lords of Hohenfels.

History+

The construction of Hohenfels Castle took place between 1150 and 1190 by the Lords of Hohenfels, who likely served as ministeriales to the Bishops of Constance and exercised lower jurisdiction over Sipplingen. The first documented mention dates back to 1191, referencing a Constance canon named Burkhard von Hohenfels. In 1292, the family split, with one branch settling in a new castle called Neu-Hohenfels. After the remaining line died out, the lordship passed to Wolf von Jungingen, whose family also became extinct. In 1437, the Lords of Landenberg took over the castle.
