History+
The origins of Hohenneuffen Castle date back to between 1100 and 1120, when it was built by Mangold von Sulmetingen, later known as Mangold von Neuffen. Its first documented mention occurred in 1198, when it was owned by the free nobles of Neuffen, including the minstrel Gottfried von Neifen. At the end of the 13th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Lords of Weinsberg, who sold it to the House of Württemberg in 1301. It proved its defensibility in 1312 by withstanding a siege. In the 15th century, the expansion into a state fortress began, intensified under Duke Ulrich in the 16th century with the construction of outworks, towers, and casemates. Despite its strength, it had to surrender to the Swabian League in 1519 but resisted the Peasants' War from 1524.
