The Hohenrechberg castle ruin is a medieval spur castle, rising south of Schwäbisch Gmünd in the Ostalb district of Baden-Württemberg. As the former ancestral seat of the Counts of Rechberg, it played a central role in the region.

History+

The first documented mention of a Ulrich von Rechberg occurred in 1179, with the castle itself likely built between 1200 and 1250. Its first official mention dates back to 1355. Conceived as a Staufer ministerialis castle, Hohenrechberg served as the center of power for the Rechberg family. Despite looting in the surrounding area by imperial cities between 1448 and 1450, the castle remained unharmed. It was also spared during the Peasants' War in 1525, while surrounding monasteries and Hohenstaufen Castle were destroyed. In 1546, it withstood the Schmalkaldic League. The castle underwent several renovations and expansions.
