Hohenrod Castle
Hohenrod Castle, also known as Hohenrode or Brigittenschloss, is a ruined hilltop castle on the 760 m above sea level Schlossberg above the municipality of Sasbachwalden in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg.
The castle was built in the middle of the 11th century by the Barons Roeder, Lords of Hohenrod, probably as a refuge and signal castle. At that time, there was a direct line of sight to Neu-Windeck Castle. The castle was probably destroyed in 1385 and abandoned in 1524, shortly before the German Peasants' War (1524-1526). In 1824 and 1899, the castle was significantly damaged by lightning strikes. Remains of the shield wall of the former castle complex are still preserved.
Around 1820, the name Brigittenschloss emerged, which probably goes back to Saint Brigitta, who was the patron saint of the Sasbach church.
