Hohenstein Castle
The Hohenstein castle ruin is the ruin of a rock castle on a steep rock cone above the river Krems south of the clustered village of Hohenstein in the municipality of Gföhl in Lower Austria.
A Reinprecht von Hohenstein is mentioned for 1168. In 1347, Pilgrim Strein von Schwarzenau took over the castle. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was already dilapidated and passed into the possession of the Gudenus family in 1699.
In the south of the formerly extensive castle complex, multi-story parts of a tower, as well as two stone window frames, a round-arched window, ashlar masonry, and a round-arched gate are still preserved as ruins.
