Hohenstein Castle Ruin, a rock castle, is in the municipality of Hohenstein in the Rheingau-Taunus district, Hesse. It is one of the largest castle ruins in the Taunus region.

History+

The construction of Hohenstein Castle is attributed to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, likely dating between 1190 and 1230. From 1260, it served as a residence for the younger line of this noble family. Count Johann III of Katzenelnbogen initiated an extensive expansion of the complex around 1422, possibly after it had been damaged in conflicts with the Counts of Nassau at the beginning of the 15th century.
