The Hohenstoffeln castle ruin, a hilltop castle, is on the Hohenstoffeln near Hilzingen-Binningen in the district of Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg.

History+

The first documented mention of Hohenstoffeln Castle dates back to 1034. In 1056, it served as a prison for Bishop Gebhard of Regensburg, Emperor Conrad II's brother, due to secret alliances against Emperor Henry III. The castles Vorderstoffeln and Mittelstoffeln were built later, and all three castles were first mentioned together in 1299. Former owners include Ludwig von Pfullendorf-Ramsberg zu Stoffeln (1067), the Staufer, the Lords of Stoffeln (1236 to approx. 1400), and the Lords of Hornstein (1623). The castles were part of the Landgraviate of Nellenburg.
