History+

The origins of Hohnstein Castle are dated to the mid-12th century, although older research suggested its creation around 1120. The castle was transferred in the mid-1170s from the Welfs to the Counts of Ilfeld, who subsequently called themselves Counts of Hohnstein and chose the site as their ancestral seat. The first documented mention occurred in 1202. Under Count Elger III, the castle was razed around 1219. After a period of prosperity in the 13th century, a division of inheritance in 1315 led to a loss of significance.
