Holter Castle
The Holter Burg castle ruin is in the municipality of Bissendorf in the Osnabrück district. It was the ancestral seat of the noble lords of Holte, who produced figures such as archbishops and prince-abbesses.
History+
The origins of Holter Burg date back to the early 12th century, when it was first built as a tower castle on a plateau. A first destruction is suspected around 1147 as part of a feud between the lords of Holte, the Bishop of Osnabrück, and the Counts of Ravensberg. Archaeological findings, particularly a layer of fire from the mid-13th century, suggest a later, final destruction between 1308 and 1315. After its destruction, Ledenburg Castle was built as the “New Holter Burg.”

Today, wall remnants and the outline of a round tower can still be seen at Holter Burg. The moats are also preserved. The ruin is publicly accessible.
