Homboll Castle, also known as Homburg or Old Castle, is the ruin of a hilltop castle at 677.7 m above sea level on the territory of the municipality of Hilzingen in the district of Konstanz in Baden-Württemberg. The castle is located about 1,500 meters southwest of Weiterdingen, west of the district of Binningen, above the Homboll estate. The Homboll castle hill is now overgrown with trees and bushes.
There are many contradictory statements about the castle. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1423, but was probably built around 1400. It is said to have been an imperial fief and, since 1415, in the possession of the younger line of the Stoffeln family. With the Stoffeln possessions, it was in the possession of the Lords of Hornstein after 1579 and then definitively since 1623. Its destruction allegedly occurred during the Thirty Years' War; according to other sources, it was already a ruin in 1561.
Description+
On the still approximately 20-meter-high, rounded hill, a five by seven-meter foundation has been preserved, which is interpreted as the remains of a keep. The castle hill is accessed via a steep ramp on the east side. The summit, with the exception of the south side, is surrounded by remnants of walls and ditches. Based on the five-meter-high wall remains, the footprint of the former castle complex is estimated at 11 by 11 meters. The walls have a thickness of up to 2.5 meters.
