Horen Caslte

The Horen ruin, often referred to as Rosenberg Castle on topographical maps, is the ruin of a hilltop castle above Küttigen in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is located at an altitude of 450 meters on a spur of the Kirchberg, about 500 meters northwest of the church, and belongs to the type of motte-and-bailey castles. (Horen is a shortened variant of the word Hochrain.)

Neither the builders nor the exact year of construction of Horen Castle are known, but archaeological investigations have shown that the ruin was inhabited in the 12th century. At that time, the complex consisted only of a residential tower in addition to an oval enceinte with a gatehouse. The area was secured by a neck ditch to the southeast. The castle was abandoned again around 1200. The last owners were the canons of Münster.

The correct name of the castle has not been preserved. Its current name dates from post-medieval times and was adopted from the surrounding farms. In the course of the 19th century, the name Rosenberg Castle also emerged.

In 1960, the ruin was excavated and conserved. Previously, only the overgrown neck ditch and a small piece of wall had testified to the castle's former existence. A renovation of the still preserved masonry followed in 1989.
