The Horen castle ruin, also known as Rosenberg Castle, is located above Küttigen in the Swiss canton of Aargau.
History+
Archaeological investigations confirm that the site was inhabited in the 12th century. At that time, the castle consisted of an oval enceinte with a gatehouse and a residential tower, secured by a neck ditch to the southeast. The castle was abandoned as early as around 1200. The last known owners were the canons of Münster. The original name of the castle has not been preserved; the current name Horen derives from surrounding farms, while in the 19th century, the name Rosenberg Castle emerged. In 1960, the ruin was excavated and conserved, followed by a renovation of the masonry in 1989.
