The Hurwang castle ruin, often also referred to as Furtheim Castle, sits on a hill near Heidenheim an der Brenz-Mergelstetten.

History+

The castle was built by the Lords of Furtheim and was first mentioned in a document in 1209. It is believed that the complex in the 12th century was even larger than the original Hellenstein Castle. Documents from Steinheim Monastery mention Ulricus von Furtheim as forest master, and the county is said to have extended over a wide area, ranging from Königsbronn to Steinheim and Neresheim, all the way to the Lonetal valley. The exact time the castle was abandoned is not recorded, but by the mid-14th century, it was already a ruin.
