The origins of Husen Castle likely date back to the 12th century, when the Dukes of Zähringen erected an initial fortification on this site. Its first documented mention as “Castrum Husen” occurred in 1246. Initially owned by the Counts of Freiburg, the castle passed to the Counts of Fürstenberg in 1303 through the marriage of Verena von Freiburg. Under Count Heinrich IV. von Fürstenberg, the complex underwent renovation and expansion between 1453 and 1477, including a neck ditch and an outer bailey. The castle served as the residence for princely castellans.
