Jagdberg Castle

Jagdberg Castle is a medieval castle ruin near Schlins in Vorarlberg. This complex was probably built in the 12th century.

Jagdberg Castle served as the central castle for the Counts of Montfort-Feldkirch or Feldkirch-Tosters for the lordship in the Vorderer Walgau, which became independent from the County of Feldkirch at the end of the 13th century.

In 1397, the castle complex came into the possession of the Habsburgs and was destroyed on September 28, 1405, during the Appenzell War by the advancing troops of the Bund ob dem See.

Reconstruction began in 1408 – but in 1440 and 1499, during the Engadine War (also known as the Swabian, Swiss, or Tyrolean War), the castle repeatedly burned down.
Restoration began in 1559.

Castle Chapel St. Michael

No remains exist today of the chapel, which was dedicated to Saint Michael and attached to the north side of the curtain wall, and was demolished in 1791.
After a village fire around 1700, which claimed fifteen houses, it is documented that everything still usable from the chapel was already moved to the partially damaged parish church in Schlins.

Restoration and Current Use

Extensive restorations were carried out in 1911, from 1938 to 1941, and again from 1951 to 1953. The interior of the palas has been used as an open-air stage since 1949.
