The Kaja Castle Ruin, once the ancestral seat of the Lords of Chiowe, is on a hill near Merkersdorf in the Hollabrunn district, within the Thayatal National Park.

History+

The first documented mention of Kaja Fortress occurred in 1196, when Duke Frederick I sealed numerous documents here. In 1360, Niklas von Kaja sold the castle to Duke Rudolf IV, but by 1376, it passed as a pledge to the Counts of Maidburg-Hardegg. Towards the end of the 14th century, Johann and Heinrich von Leipa conquered the castle and used it as a base for raids. Between 1425 and 1427, Kaja fell victim to the Hussites. Around 1430, Ulrich von Eyczing received the castle for loyal services and began its reconstruction.
