The castle ruin Kammerstein is located in the border area between Perchtoldsdorf and Kaltenleutgeben in Lower Austria. Its origins date back to the mid-13th century and are closely linked to the family history of the Lords of Perchtoldsdorf.

History+

The construction of Kammerstein Castle took place around 1240/50 under Otto II of Perchtoldsdorf. This step was a reaction to the destruction of Perchtoldsdorf Castle during noble uprisings under his father Otto I. The name “Chemerstain” is either attributed to Otto's title as chamberlain of Austria or to the fact that the castle was built on chamber property, which originated from a donation in 1002. The strategic location of the castle was also due to the uncertain period of the Interregnum after the death of Frederick II. Later, under Albrecht I, the son of Rudolf I of Habsburg, the Austrian nobility rebelled again. Otto's son, Otto III, also participated in these uprisings.
