History+

The origins of settlement in Kaninë date back to the 4th century BC, when Illyrians established a small fortress here. In the 4th century AD, the site was refortified to protect against barbarian incursions. Emperor Justinian further expanded the defenses, leading to the development of an urban settlement. In the 10th century, during Bulgarian rule, Kaninë became a bishopric. In the late Middle Ages, the castle maintained its strategic importance. It served as a garrison for the Despots of Epirus and was given as a dowry to Manfred of Sicily in the late 13th century. Between 1270 and 1330, it repeatedly served as a residence for Angevin governors and later became the center of a small principality. In 1417, the Ottomans conquered Kaninë, marking the end of local princely rule. Although the castle was still well-preserved and housed a garrison in the 17th century, the English painter Edward Lear found it in ruins by 1848.
