Keppenbach Castle

The origins of Keppenbach Castle date back to 1161, when Hartmut von Keppenbach was mentioned as a ministerialis of the Zähringer, and the castle became the ancestral seat of the Lords of Keppenbach. In 1251, the castle was mentioned in a mediation text. By 1336 at the latest, it had developed into a Ganerbenburg (a castle owned by multiple families). At the end of the 14th century, the complex was destroyed by the Habsburgs, who were expanding their influence in the Breisgau region. The Lords of Keppenbach rebuilt it at the beginning of the 15th century, but the castle was destroyed again in the German Peasants' War in 1525.
