Keseburg Castle

The origins of Keseburg likely date back to the 11th century, when it was built by the Counts of Ziegenhain and Reichenbach. It was first documented in 1144 as the seat of the bailiffs of Keseberg. Through the marriage of Lukardis of Ziegenhain-Reichenbach to Friedrich of Ziegenhain in 1186, the castle came into the possession of Friedrich, who thereafter called himself Count of Wildungen. Later, Sophia, the daughter of Friedrich and Lukardis, sold the castle before 1227 to Landgrave Ludwig IV of Thuringia. This sale led to disputes as Sophia's family's consent was missing. The dispute was only settled in 1233, and the castle definitively fell to the Landgraviate of Thuringia.
