Khünburg Castle

The first documented mention of Khünburg dates back to 1189, when it was owned by the ministerialis Count Pero de Kinburch. From the 13th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Diocese of Bamberg. In 1311, the complex was pledged to Duke Henry of Carinthia. A fire around 1540 or 1541 led to the abandonment of the castle, after which it fell into disrepair. The original Romanesque complex was built around 1200 and covered an area of approximately 30 by 40 meters. After the mid-14th century, no significant structural changes were made. In 1913, a restoration was carried out to preserve the existing structures.
