Kindhausen Castle
The Kindhausen ruin is the remnant of a medieval castle located in the municipality of Bergdietikon in the canton of Aargau.
As there are no reliable written sources about the ruin, much remains unclear. The builders were probably the Lords of Schönenwerd, vassals of the Counts of Kyburg and later of the Habsburgs. During an excavation in 1936, ceramic shards and a lance-shaped arrow iron were found. These finds suggest a construction towards the end of the 12th century. In the middle of the 13th century, the castle fell victim to a fire and was abandoned. A short time later, the outbuilding was also abandoned, and both buildings fell into disrepair.
Structure+
When the castle was excavated in 1936 by Reinhold Bosch, Albert Matter, and Karl Heid, hardly any visible traces of the ruin remained. Some wall remnants were excavated and preserved.
The castle was divided into two parts. On the southern hilltop, the highest point, stood a round tower next to a rectangular palas. The elevated entrance to the tower, with an inner diameter of 4.1 meters and a wall thickness of 1.2 meters, was probably on the first floor and connected to the palas by a wooden gallery. An outbuilding stood on the northern hilltop.
