Kirnburg Castle

Around 1160, Burkhart I., a follower of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, had the oldest part of the Kirnburg built. The castle was first documented in 1219. Later, it came into the possession of the Lords of Üsenberg, who expanded the outer bailey in the 13th century. In 1352, Heinrich IV. von Hachberg acquired the castle and the associated lordship, residing there temporarily. Subsequently, the Kirnburg was pledged to various regional noble families, including the Schnewlin-Landeck, Martin Malterer, and Konrad von Weinsberg. From 1424, the Bishops of Strasbourg were the feudal lords, who fortified the castle one last time. In 1515, Wolf von Hürnheim acquired the Kirnburg as a fief.
