Kleinfrankreich Castle
The castle ruin Kleinfrankreich, also known as Thurm Frankreich, is a medieval hillside castle in the southern Palatinate Forest. As a former outwork of the nearby Berwartstein Castle, it played a strategically important role in its defense.
History+
The complex was built in 1484 by Knight Hans von Trotha, also known as Hans Trapp, as an outpost for Berwartstein Castle. Its primary function was to defend the so-called 'Leichenfeld', an area from which siege cannons could effectively attack the main castle. Through two-sided fire control from Berwartstein and Kleinfrankreich, the main castle was successfully defended until its fire in 1591. In the 17th century, during either the Thirty Years' War or the War of the Palatine Succession, the outwork suffered significant damage. Restoration of the remains began in 2005.
