The Körse castle ruin, remains of a hilltop castle, rises on a granite cone encircled by the Spree river near Schirgiswalde-Kirschau in Saxony. Once the largest and strongest defensive structure in Upper Lusatia.

History+

In the 10th century, as Slavic settlements expanded into the region around present-day Kirschau, the rocky spur was used for the construction of a defensive complex, known as Korzym, which protected the settlement area. Around 1100, German settlers took over the castle, destroyed it, and between 1200 and 1250, built a stone fortification on the same site. This castle, whose name Körse refers to its Sorbian origins, served to protect the Bohemian Steig, an important trade route between Upper Lusatia and Bohemia, as well as a nearby salt road.
