Kräheneck Castle

The origins of Kräheneck Castle date back to the 11th century when it was built by the Lords of Weißenstein, also known as the Lords of Kräheneck. Its first documented mention under the name Creinegg occurred in 1194. It is presumed that Kräheneck was conceived as an unfinished defensive structure for the nearby Weißenstein Castle, an assumption supported by the absence of economic buildings. The complex was first renovated in 1883 and underwent further restoration in 1972. By 1936, Kräheneck was already listed as a historical monument. Between 1928 and 1939, castle festivals were held here, a tradition that has been revived in recent years, most recently in 2008 with the third Kräheneck Summer Games.
