The castle ruin Kronest, also known as Bibrachstein, is on a rocky outcrop near Neumarkt im Mühlkreis in Upper Austria. This complex once served as a residential castle.

History+

The first documented mention of Kronest Castle occurred around 1334, when Friedrich Schrautolf, the regional judge of Machland, received permission to build it. As the land belonged to St. Florian Abbey, he had to pay annual tributes. In 1377, Hans der Lasberger acquired the complex, then known as the “Tower of Schrautolf.” During the Hussite Wars around 1428, the castle was damaged, and the keep burned down. The current name Kronest, meaning “crow's nest,” also originated around this time.
