Kühnring Castle

The castle's origins date back to the early 12th century when Hadmar I of Kuenring had the ancestral castle built on a site where a chapel had already been consecrated by his grandfather Azzo of Gobatsburg in the late 11th century. This chapel later served as the castle chapel. In the 13th century, the castle was owned by Eufemia von Kuenring-Pottendorf. Around 1460, Georg von Kuenring, as marshal, came into conflict with Gamareth Fronauer. Johann Götzesdorfer, a follower of Fronauer, occupied the by then neglected Kühnring Castle and used it as a base for plundering. Wolfgang Kadawer, the administrator of Eggenburg, expelled Götzesdorfer and destroyed the castle.
