Kugelsburg Castle

The origins of Kugelsburg date back to the late 12th century, although it was first documented in 1225. It was built on behalf of Abbot Witukind of Corvey to secure a crossing over the Twiste river on the old trade route between Fritzlar and Paderborn. The Lords of Everstein, vassals of Corvey Abbey, are named as the probable builders. Between 1239 and 1293, the Lords of Everstein inhabited the complex, which often led to disputes with the town of Volkmarsen. After destruction in 1260, the castle was rebuilt and reinforced in the early 14th century with the construction of a keep. From 1346, the Rabe von Canstein family, who later called themselves Rabe von Coglenberg, resided in the castle and built the late Gothic palas. In the 15th century, the Electorate of Cologne acquired full mortgage rights.
