Lage Castle

The first documented mention of Lage Castle dates back to 1183, associated with a Hermann von Lage, who was then a canon in Münster. Between 1324 and 1326, the castle suffered severe damage during the Guelders Feud under Bishop Ludwig of Münster. The Utrecht Bishop Johann IV von Arkel had the complex rebuilt between 1329 and 1330 for his ally Hermann von Lage. Although Hermann von Lage sold the castle to Bishop Johann IV in 1346, he remained in possession as the purchase price was not fully paid. In 1380, the castle was largely destroyed again during an attack by Bishop Florenz von Wevelinghoven. Another reconstruction took place from 1439 to 1447 under Bishop Rudolf von Diepholz, after which Lage served as an episcopal administrative building.
