Langensteinbach

Langensteinbach Castle, also known as the Roman Tower, is the remnant of a hilltop castle on a hill south of the village of Langensteinbach, in the immediate vicinity of the later-built chapel ruin of St. Barbara.

The castle was built around 1100 as a tower castle. The tower had 3.5-meter thick foundations at its base and was probably once 35 meters high. After the partial destruction of the tower by fire, a moat was dug directly adjacent to the foundations during its reconstruction to protect against siege engines. The castle was abandoned as early as the 13th century. The dating resulted from ceramic remains found during an excavation in the 1970s.

Of the former castle complex, only the stump of the residential tower, restored during the excavation, and a surrounding ditch-and-wall construction remain.
