Laurenburg Castle

The origins of Laurenburg Castle date back to approximately 1090. It was built by Count Dudo-Heinrich von Laurenburg, the first known ancestor of the later House of Nassau, and his father. Previously, it is believed the family resided in Lipporn. In the 12th century, the counts moved their ancestral seat to Nassau and adopted that name. Laurenburg Castle subsequently experienced several changes of ownership. When Peter Melander von Holzappel, a military commander from Niederhadamar, acquired the complex in 1643, it was already in a dilapidated state. Only the pentagonal, four-story keep, presumably dating from the 12th or 13th century, has been restored multiple times in recent years. Around 1800, Laurenburg Castle was built below the castle ruin.
