On a spur near the village church of Essingen's identically named district stands the Lauterburg castle ruin. This hilltop castle in Baden-Württemberg.

History+

The origins of Lauterburg Castle likely date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Lords of Lauterburg. The first documentary mention appears in 1128 with Adalbert von Lauterburg. A reconstruction of the complex took place between the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1594, a new Renaissance castle was built on its site, but it was destroyed by fire in 1732.
