The Lauterstein Castle Ruin, also known as Niederlauterstein, stands on a gneiss rock in the Erzgebirgskreis in Saxony. This medieval hilltop castle once served as a center of power and protected a trade route across the Ore Mountains. Since the Thirty Years' War, it has been a ruin.

History+

Archaeological findings date the castle's construction to the second half of the 12th century. Its first documented mention occurred in 1304. Following the Schellenberg Feud and the subsequent loss of power by the Lords of Schellenberg, Margrave Friedrich the Freidige of Meissen enfeoffed Burgrave Albrecht von Altenburg and Otto von Leisnig with Lauterstein in 1323. In 1434, Kaspar von Berbisdorf acquired the lordship for 4,000 guilders.
