History+

The origins of Lavant Castle date back to 1128, when it became the residence of the Bishops of Lavant—a role it maintained until the 17th century. The complex reached its current extent in the mid-13th century and was first documented in 1293. Under Bishop Martin Herkules Rettinger von Wiespach, the castle underwent extensive renovations and new constructions in 1561. However, a fire in 1673 sealed its fate, after which the castle was left to decay.
