Near the pilgrimage chapel in Rümmelsheim, the castle ruin Layen sits on the Schlossbühl. It was a hilltop castle.
History+
Burg Layen was first documented in 1169, referred to as “castro Leiga” (Fortified House Layen) along with the village of Rümmelsheim. It was a possession of the Lords of Bolanden and included lands in the surrounding villages of Waldlaubersheim, Genheim, Roth, Schweppenhausen, and Eckenroth. The castle, whose name means “on the stone,” served to protect the Trollbach valley, through which a road passed. In 1680, the complex underwent restoration.
