History+
The origins of Lemberg Castle date back to 1198, when the abbot of Hornbach Monastery handed over the lands “Gutinberc” and “Ruprehtisberc” to Count Heinrich I of Zweibrücken. Around 1200, the Counts of Zweibrücken began construction of Lemberg Castle and the outer bailey Ruppertstein. In 1230, the “Castrum Lewenberc” was first mentioned in documents. A chapel, whose foundations are still visible today, was mentioned in 1502, although archaeological finds suggest an earlier dating to the second half of the 13th century. Gozo von Lemberg is the first known castellan, mentioned in 1269. In 1333, the castle fell to Count Simon I of Zweibrücken-Bitsch.
