The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Leobenegg castle ruin, a former rock castle, stands on a steep cone above the village of Leoben in the municipality of Krems in Carinthia. Its history dates back to the early 13th century, but it has been left to decay since the late 17th century.

History+

Leobenegg was first documented in 1208, when an Eberhardus de Liubneke appeared as a witness in a charter by Bishop Walther von Vatz of Gurk. In 1241, Count Hermann II of Ortenburg enfeoffed Raspo von Friesach with the estates aput Leubenek. The Leubenegg family maintained ties with Millstatt Abbey; for instance, Wolfhar von Leubenegg donated estates in 1318 for the salvation of his father and brother. In 1398, the brothers Rudprecht and Andre von Leubenegg pledged allegiance to Archbishop Gregor of Salzburg. Members of the family repeatedly served as administrators in the nearby town of Gmünd, particularly in the 14th century.
