Leonrod Castle
The Leonrod ruin, also known as Lewenrode Castle, is the ruin of a moated castle on a pond in the Bibert Valley on the edge of the Leonrod district of the market town of Dietenhofen in the Ansbach district in Bavaria.
The moated castle was built in the 13th century as the ancestral seat and joint inheritance castle by the Lords of Leonrod, who emerged from the Lords of Buttendorf, to secure an important road connection to Nuremberg and was first mentioned in 1235 with a Rudolf "miles de Lewenrode".
In the 14th and 16th centuries, structural changes were made to the castle. The castle was spared from the Thirty Years' War, but shortly thereafter in 1651, it fell victim to a fire due to negligence and was not rebuilt. In the 17th to 18th centuries, a hunter's house was built. The castle is now owned by a community of heirs, which dates back to the noble family that died out in 1951.
One of the members of the noble family was Franz Leopold Freiherr von Leonrod, who was Bishop of Eichstätt from 1867 to 1905 and was one of the most important bishops of the diocese.

The very large castle complex, surrounded by a deep moat, had four buildings around a rectangular 20-meter-high keep with an elevated entrance at a height of 9 meters, on a base area of 6 by 6 meters and a wall thickness of about 2 meters. In the outer bailey was the castle chapel, St. George's Chapel from 1327, as well as the hunter's house with a hip roof and half-timbered upper floor. The castle complex still shows the almost preserved keep and stately wall remains, vaults, and the well in the castle courtyard, as well as a gate tower. The castle site is now an archaeological monument.
