Lichtenberg Castle

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Lichtenberg Castle Ruin, a spur castle near Thallichtenberg in the Kusel district of Rhineland-Palatinate, is known as Germany's longest castle complex.

History+

Lichtenberg Castle was first documented in 1214 during a legal dispute. At that time, the Counts of Veldenz were accused of unlawfully building the castle on the territory of the Benedictine monastery of St. Remigius in Reims. Although its destruction was ordered, the castle remained intact and in the possession of the counts. After the Veldenz line died out in 1444, it passed to the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken and remained there until the end of the duchy in 1793. Despite occupation by French troops in 1693, the castle was never captured or destroyed by attacks.
