The Lichtenegg Castle Ruin is an impressive High Medieval noble castle, majestically rising above the village of the same name in the municipality of Birgland. Located in the Amberg-Sulzbach district of Upper Palatinate, it offers not only a deep insight into past times but also a wide view over the surrounding landscape.

History+

The first documented mention of Lichtenegg Castle dates back to around 1300 in the Nuremberg Reichssalbüchlein, indicating the site's considerable age. It was at times part of the Imperial Bailiwick of Nuremberg and experienced numerous changes of ownership throughout its history. The castle was already destroyed in the 15th century. Since 1998, the ruin, now owned by the municipality of Birgland, has been undergoing restoration with private and public funds.
