Lichtentann Castle

Lichtentann Castle was built by the Lords of Tann, ministeriales of the Archbishops of Salzburg, to secure the area around Lake Wallersee for Salzburg. Originally, the County of Henndorf was a fief of the Bavarian dukes. During the Interregnum, Eckhart VI von Tann began construction of the castle around 1272, but shortly thereafter had to cede it to Archbishop Friedrich II von Walchen for five years. Although his son Eckhart VII was forbidden from further expansion, the complex was completed. Following a division of property, the court of Lichtentann-Köstendorf emerged from the County of Henndorf. After the death of Eckhart XI, Archbishop Ortolf von Weißeneck seized the castle and large parts of the property as a reverted fief. Eckhart X received Lichtentann Castle and the Köstendorf court as compensation and for life.
