Liebenburg Castle

Liebenburg castle was built around 1170 by the Counts of Castel. Its first documented mention was in 1218 in connection with Boemund von Liebenberg, a vassal of the Counts of Zweibrücken. In 1334, the castle came into the possession of Archbishop Balduin of Trier. During a conflict over the Trier archbishopric and electoral dignity between Ulrich von Manderscheid and Raban von Helmstatt, the castle was destroyed in 1430. Heinrich von Sötern was enfeoffed with the castle in 1479. Its final destruction occurred in 1677 during the Dutch War by French troops, after which it served as a quarry. Initial excavation work to uncover the site took place in 1926. In 1976, the keep above the cistern was rebuilt.
