Liebenfels Castle

Liebenfels was first documented in 1312 under the name Liewenvelse. The castle experienced a phase between 1484 and 1490 when it was conquered, occupied, and partially damaged by Hungarian troops. Remains of bulwarks below the medieval complex still bear witness to this period of occupation. As early as around 1690, Valvasor described the castle as “almost deserted,” indicating its gradual decline. The two massive keeps from the 13th and 14th centuries are separated by an extensive outer bailey. The larger of the two towers, with six stories, formed the core of the main castle and features window groups on the top floor, whose original meaning remains unclear.
