The castle ruin of Liebenstein, a spur castle, stands above the Thuringian village of Liebenstein.
History+
Presumably built in the 12th century by the Käfernburgers, Liebenstein Castle was originally the seat of the ministerial Lords of Liebenstein. In 1369, the complex passed into the possession of the Ludowingers. A change occurred in 1434 when the Lords of Witzleben became the owners. They converted the castle into a residential palace in the mid-16th century. The complex fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry by the villagers.

The Liebenstein castle ruin is located in Liebenstein in the Ilm-Kreis, Thuringia, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 380 meters above sea level.

Today, significant parts of the castle remain. The ruin is freely accessible and can be visited by the public.
